I wish I could start every day with a Pony Pasture morning walk! Sometimes you get asked what makes you happiest. This has always been one of my answers. Walking in nature, alone, bonus when I have my camera. Nothing brings me more peace and clarity. It’s like a reset of sorts. Taking some time to step away from screens, people and noise can do you so much good.

Today was one of those magical mornings.

I wasn’t able to make it out during the thick fog that I saw on my commute, but as soon as I could, I rushed down to the closest location to take it all in. We had a ton of rain this month and the James River was raging. Some of the pathways were blocked by high water that made its way farther up than usual on the river banks.

Here’s some images of that perfect winter morning landscape.

I’m not a big fan of spiders, at least not close-up, but they do beautiful work. Especially in the morning light.

This image reminds me of my childhood. I’m not exactly sure why, but it’s like a glimpse into a dream or flashback. The way the light hits the water and that specific tree on the right. We spent a lot of time playing in the woods as kids. Something I don’t think is done enough anymore. We probably would have kept walking alongside the water and eventually found a turtle or frog friend 🙂

I walked into an open area of the woods. At first glace it looked magical, everything was glowing white in the morning sun and dew. Upon further review… all of that white is a layer of I don’t know what kind of webs, but I felt that if I stood there much longer, it was about to turn into a movie scene where the creatures start coming towards me. I legitimately backed away slowly.

This is the classic spot on pony pasture where you come or go on kayaks or tubes. If you know this spot, you know how crazy high that water is! You couldn’t even see the steps.

This was one of the paths I wasn’t able to take. Blocked off by flooding. Very pretty though.

And one black and white image to end this post reminiscent of when I took film photography in high school. Those were the days!
