Advice from a Professional, Experienced Branding Photographer in Richmond, Virginia.
Our eyes make decisions before our brain even realizes…
You are exceptionally good at what you do. You have years of experience, impressive qualifications, and clients who rave about working with you.
But if someone visits your website or social media and sees outdated headshots, generic stock photos, or images that don’t reflect the quality of your work, they might move on before even attempting to get to know you.
The simple truth is, people make snap judgments based on what they see. Before they read. And when potential customers are comparing businesses, your visual presentation can influence whether they trust you enough to take the next step.
As a branding photographer with a background in creative marketing, design, advertising, and commercial television production, I’ve seen firsthand how businesses present themselves visually and how it will influence how people perceive them.
Professional photography isn’t just about looking good. It’s not about pretty pictures. It’s about helping potential customers understand who you are, feel comfortable with your business, and make you the obvious choice.
If this feels overwhelming to you, like another thing you have to put on your to-do list to figure out, know that’s what I’m here for. You’re not supposed to know how to be creative, that’s my job. Let me do it for you so you can go back to doing what you do best.

People judge your business before they ever meet you
When I worked in television marketing and commercial production, I saw a clear difference between businesses investing in high-quality marketing and those settling for cheap commercials and photography.
The production quality communicated something about the business before the audience knew anything else about it. And there is a very clear and separate audience for each. You need to decide which one you want to be. If someone wants a hamburger, they can choose McDonald’s, or an upscale steakhouse or butcher. Those businesses advertise in very different ways to different people. Even if the same person wants both, they will be at different times of their life.
That same principle applies to your website and social media.
Imagine you’re looking for a professional service provider. You find two businesses offering similar services. One has a polished website with current photographs of the owner and team. The other has an outdated website, an old headshot, or no photos, and a handful of generic stock. Or nowadays, the dreaded AI generated slop that you know is fake. Talk about offputting right away…
You haven’t spoken to either business. You don’t actually know which one will do a better job. But you’ve probably already formed an impression of both based just on what you see and how your brain perceives the value of each.
People want to know that they’re hiring someone trustworthy, competent, and worth the investment. Your visual presentation can help establish that confidence, or it can leave potential customers questioning whether your business is the right choice.
Your potential customers don’t know how good you are until you give them a reason to believe it.
I’ve seen businesses do excellent work while presenting themselves online in a way that doesn’t do their expertise justice at all. It hurts it. Their business has grown, their skills have improved, and their clients are happy, but their marketing hasn’t kept up.
That’s such a missed opportunity.
You shouldn’t have to convince someone that your business is professional while your website suggests otherwise.

Your photos help build trust before the first conversation
When someone hires you, they may make their decision before they’ve ever met you in person. At least the decision of who to reach out to first.
They find you through a referral, discover you on social media, or visit your website after a Google search. They’re trying to figure out who you are, whether they can trust you, and whether they feel comfortable working with you.
This is especially important for service-based businesses. If you’re an attorney, medical professional, consultant, or business owner providing a personal service, people want to know who’s on the other side of that transaction.
They want to see the actual people they’ll be working with, they want to picture hiring you.
I remember when replacing generic stock photography with pictures of the real business owner and team was a big step forward for many businesses. Now, with AI-generated imagery becoming more common, authenticity deserves even more attention.
Quick opinion and note on AI in content generation: TL;DR it’s BAD. Personally, I would never want AI-generated photographs representing my business. If I’m hiring someone for a service that requires trust, I want to see who I’m actually working with. A fabricated image of a business owner or fake team doesn’t give me that confidence, it immediately turns me away and makes me wonder what they’re hiding. Or gives the impression of them being lazy and cutting corners.
People want to know what to expect. Authenticity is the name of the game here and a crucial part of the trust-building process. If your business relies on real relationships, you need to show the real. Just in a professional way.
And there’s a big difference between looking professional and pretending to be someone you’re not.
Photography can help people get to know you before they meet you. I hear this myself when people tell me they feel like they already know me because they’ve watched my Instagram videos. It’s one of my favorite compliments! I want people to feel comfortable with me before we ever have a one on one conversation.
Your marketing can start building that relationship, too.

Pretty photos are nice, purposeful photos are what matters
One of the biggest mistakes I see business owners make is copying what they think successful people in their industry are doing.
I once worked with a realtor who knew she needed professional photographs to stand out. She didn’t know what she wanted, but she wanted to keep up. She asked me to take the “typical realtor poses” she saw everyone else using.
I told her that wasn’t why she was hiring me.
She was hiring me so we could create custom photographs that helped her stand apart from the hundreds of other realtors in her local market.
We needed to figure out what made her different and why someone would choose to work with her rather than another agent. Simply recreating the same photographs everyone else had wouldn’t accomplish that.
This is where personal branding photography becomes particularly valuable.
It’s not about taking a handful of attractive portraits. It’s about identifying what makes you different and creating images that communicate those qualities to the people you want to reach.
This also applies to team and staff Headshots. You may assume they need to look a certain way, but people specifically call me because they DON’T want the generic headshots of their team, they want something different, something unique that feels like them. So we discuss the vibe, the brand, the people, and we set up the Headshots in a way that reflects all of that.
Those differences matter and your photographs should help communicate them.
If your photos look exactly like everyone else’s, you’re missing an opportunity to show people why they should choose you.

Your photography should tell a bigger story
A professional headshot is a great starting point, but it can only convey a small part of your story.
If your website features the same photo on every page, you’re missing opportunities to show people what your business does, how you work, and what makes you different.
I worked with a woman who creates beautiful garden arrangements and teaches container gardening classes. She already had an established business, a substantial following, relationships with recognizable brands, and a YouTube channel. She also created educational products, including workbooks and gardening resources.
She had plenty of expertise. What she needed was a stronger collection of photographs to communicate that expertise visually.
After our branding session, she immediately started using her new images on her website and social media. She also had photographs to share with publications and brand partners, use for her YouTube video covers, and incorporate into her educational products.
The images helped her tell a more complete story. People could see not only what she taught, but also the person behind the expertise and her genuine enthusiasm for what she did. And that she had put time in to invest in her business, which makes you believe she will be worth your investment.
That’s the value of planning a branding session strategically.
You’re creating a library of images you can use across your marketing, rather than scrambling to find a suitable photograph every time you need one.

Your photos should match the business you’ve built
Here’s where my background in marketing and advertising comes into play.
When I worked in television, I helped create marketing for brands that served very different audiences. Every commercial, advertisement, and promotional piece had to consider exactly who we were speaking to. Even within the same brand, whatever campaign we were focused on at the time, may have had a very specific audience we needed to target.
The visual style and messaging needed to reflect the audience each brand wanted to reach.
I bring that same thinking to branding photography.
A business targeting a luxury audience needs a different approach from one that prides itself on being casual, approachable, and down-to-earth. Neither is better. What matters is whether your photographs align with your audience and the experience you want to communicate.
That’s why I don’t believe in cookie-cutter branding sessions.
Before we start taking photos, I want to understand your business, your audience, your goals, and what makes you different. We develop a strategic plan for images that support those goals and work with your website and marketing.
We’re not just choosing poses and backgrounds. We’re deciding what your visuals need to communicate.
And if you’ve invested in professional photography but aren’t using the images, you’re missing part of the opportunity. Your photographs should be working across your website, social media, email marketing, presentations, and other materials.

Is Professional Photography really worth the investment?
I understand why business owners hesitate to spend money on Branding Photography. Running a business is expensive, and you want to know that your investments are worthwhile.
But I’d encourage you to look at your website and social media from a stranger’s perspective.
Ask yourself:
- Can someone quickly understand who I am and what I do?
- Do my photographs reflect the quality of my current work?
- Can potential customers get a sense of my personality and the people behind my business?
- Do my images help me stand out from competitors?
- Does my visual presentation match the clients I want to attract?
You could even ask a friend to review your website without explaining anything beforehand. Ask what impression they get and whether the images help them feel connected to you and your business.
You may discover a gap between the business you know you have and the business your online presence communicates.
Customers make decisions based on a combination of factors, including referrals, reviews, expertise, communication, and their overall experience with your business.
But that doesn’t mean your photographs aren’t contributing to their impression of you.
Professional photography is an investment in how you communicate your value. It can help you present your business more clearly, build familiarity, and give potential customers more reasons to feel confident about choosing you.
The key is to approach it strategically rather than simply taking a few pretty pictures and hoping for the best.
And one crucial part that I haven’t mention yet – when clients (aka you) finally have photos they’re proud of, they’re more willing to put themselves out there. That confidence WILL influence how consistently you show up in your marketing, and that’s saying something.

Your visual marketing should reflect your expertise
Your business has probably evolved since you first started. You’ve gained experience, refined your services, and developed a better understanding of the clients you want to work with.
Does your visual marketing reflect that growth?
If your online presence still represents an earlier version of your business, potential customers may not see the person you’ve become or the quality of the work you’re doing today. I see this ALL the time. People haven’t let their visuals catch up to their business.
You don’t want to look like everyone else. You don’t need hundreds of photographs. And you certainly don’t need to manufacture a version of yourself that doesn’t exist.
You need images that are authentic, intentional, and aligned with your business and your ideal customers..
That’s how I approach branding photography. I bring my background experience into the planning process so we can create purposeful images that help tell your story and connect with the right people.
We’re creating visual assets that help people understand who you are, what you do, and why they might want to work with you.
And if you’re not willing to invest in how you present your own business, why should potential customers assume you’ll invest in them?
To summarize, people make snap judgments based on what they see, often before they read a single word about your business. Your visuals influence whether they perceive you as professional, trustworthy, authentic, and worth the investment, or move on to someone else.
Professional branding photography helps you make that first impression count. When your images reflect the quality of your work, show the real people behind your business, and communicate what makes you different, sharing your story and values, you give potential customers more reasons to trust you and feel confident choosing you.

Here are a few signs you are ready (or overdue) for a branding photo session!
These are some common indicators I get from Richmond businesses when they inquire about a Branding Photo Shoot:
- You’re about to launch something new, such as a product, website or new offer
- Your business has grown or shifted, and the visuals no longer match the vibe
- You’ve worked really hard to grow this business, and you are ready to celebrate this next chapter with the visuals
- You are the face of your business, but that face isn’t showing up enough online
- You are sick of iPhone photos that just aren’t cutting it
- You thought you could use stock photos, but none of them feel right and give you the “ick”
- You want to build up your social media, want to show up more online but need some help getting there
- And of course – you want to celebrate something! This is one of the best reasons, let’s show off how far you’ve come, and have fun with it!
Why Local Matters: Working with a Richmond Branding Photographer
All cities have their own personalities, and Richmond definitely has multiple personality disorder. Photos in Short Pump look way different than photos in the Arts District, or Church Hill or Libby Park or Shockoe Bottom.
It’s important to work with a photographer who knows the area, listens to your branding needs, learns about your business’s brand, and helps you choose a location that makes sense for who you are, who you want to reach and work with, and the visuals and vibe reflect those details. And if you have no location and want to shoot indoors, I have a studio space that could work perfectly for you!
I can suggest locations that fit your aesthetic, reflect you and your audience, feel authentic and natural to you, make you feel rooted in the community and shows off what you care about. Especially if you serve local clients!
